The Truth about Wigs

For those dealing with hair loss a wig sometimes feels like the final frontier. All other avenues of treatment, and concealment have been exhausted and this is now the best option. Or for those dealing with hair loss as the result of medical treatment the wig can feel like part of the disease.

Wigs serve many purposes but no matter your reason for needing or wanting a wig, wigs should be fun and freeing in many ways. I know I have hair, and in many ways that makes me a bit unrelatable, but I also talk to people who wear wigs for many different reasons and these are some of their favorite things about wigs.

  • no bad hair days

  • change up the look without damaging the bio hair

  • no sunburned scalp

  • no style limitations

  • faster to get ready in the morning

If you have been curious or considering a wig, this is for you.

Are you ready for a wig?

Ready, is really a very personal choice. Some people are ready when they've lost a certain amount of hair. Some people are ready because they get a comment from some terrible person, and some just want to play.

Are wigs comfortable and secure?

With anything new there is an adjustment period. The base caps in wigs have many features to keep them comfortable and in place. Having a professional size you, and help with fit is a key point for wig comfort and security. You can also add things like a wig grip to keep your wig secure.

Will anyone be able to tell I'm wearing a wig?

A properly fitted wig with quality construction should be undetectable. The main thing that usually gives it away is anyone who saw your hair before, or your hair is just too good to be true.

What kind of maintenance do wigs need?

I recommend at home maintenance washing. How often you was will depend on how often you wear your piece. A daily wear piece may need to be washed once per week or once every 2 weeks, but a piece that isn't worn often could be washed once a year. As for in salon maintenance, I recommend having your regularly worn wigs refurbished once a year. For synthetic hair this means a deep clean, and refreshing the style. For human hair this means a deep clean, refreshing the color, and maybe a trim on the ends.

How much should I expect to spend on a wig?

Wigs come in a lot of price points. synthetic wigs are typically the most cost effective. synthetic wigs can run as low as $50, and be as high as $600. Human hair wigs will always cost more, starting around $100 and going up to $10,000 or more. Wild!

How do I find a quality wig?

It is always ideal to purchase in person where you can see the quality of wigs offered. I know that isn't always reasonable for everyone. Things to look at are the cap construction, this is what the inside of the wig looks like. The inside of the cap should have features that make it comfortable to wear all day, and help adjust it to perfectly fit your head size. Next is the top and front construction. For the majority of styles you will want the top to be hand-tied and the front to be hand-tied lace. This will give the most natural look. Hand-tied means that each individual hair is tied to the lace making it look like it's growing right out of your scalp. The knots where the hair is tied should be small and barely visible from 2+ feet away. The more you spend the more quality and service you should get. Purchasing in person you should be measured and sized, they should be able to fully customize including: cut, sizing, part line, hairline and any maintenance you may need.

Should I get human hair or synthetic hair?

I almost always recommend starting with synthetic hair. It is lower maintenance, and holds it's style even if it gets wet or sweaty. Some people eventually want human hair wigs but many people stick with synthetic hair. Human hair wigs will be much more expensive and not always better. I always recommend trying on both while you are shopping so you can experience the options first hand.

What if my head is sensitive?

There are many cap options available, so there is likely something that wouldn't irritate the already sensitive scalp, but if the worry keeps you from wanting to pick something out there are other options. For those who have been most comfortable in hats, turbans, scarves, etc; there are options that you can wear with those to make it look like bangs, or face framing, or length hanging out of the chosen head covering.
